Unfortunately, we only had one day in Rome (first time visit for all in our party) as it was only a port stop on our cruise. Fortunately, we booked with Raphael Tours and got a small taste of all the major historic sites I wanted to see while in Rome. Our driver picked our party up at the cruise port and drove us into the city where we met up with our tour guide Massimiliano (drive took about 1 hr from the port). He was very friendly, knowledgable , and passionate about the history of Rome. He first took us to the Colosseum, then the forum, pantheon, Trevi fountain, multiple city squares, brought us to a delicious restaurant (forgot the name) where I had the best pasta dish ever! After lunch, we went to the Vatican where we got to go into the Sistine Chapel, St. Peters Basilica and the museums. I was in awe pretty much the entire time we were in the museums and St. Peters Basilica. So much to see with so little time. Although we didn’t get to spend as much time at each of the sites as I wanted to, Massimiliano did an excellent job cramming as much info about each place as he could with the time allotted. If you want to get the most out of your day by visiting all the major historic sites along with getting history of each place, this is the definitely worth it. We paid 1/2 the price than what the cruise ship tours were offering, saw more places, and had our own personal guide.

This massive amphitheater once hosted grand spectacles, from gladiator battles to exotic animal hunts and dramatic re-enactments of famous Roman victories. As you step inside, your guide will bring the ruins to life, sharing stories of the skilled fighters, the emperors who presided over the games, and the impressive engineering techniques that allowed this structure to hold up to 50,000 spectators.
- 2 2
Roman Forum
Leaving the Colosseum behind, venture into the Roman Forum, once the center of daily life in Ancient Rome. This vast archaeological site was home to bustling markets, grand temples, and the heart of Roman politics. Walk among the ruins of important structures like the Arch of Titus, commemorating Rome’s conquest of Jerusalem, the House of the Vestal Virgins, where priestesses maintained the sacred flame, and the Senate House, where major decisions of the empire were made. Each monument tells a story of Rome’s glorious past, offering insight into the daily lives of its citizens.
- 3 3
Vittoriano (Pass By)
As you continue your exploration, admire the Vittoriano, one of Rome’s most striking modern monuments. Built in honor of Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of unified Italy, this grand structure dominates Piazza Venezia with its white marble facade, grand staircases, and towering columns. Often referred to as the "Altar of the Fatherland," it also houses Italy’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, paying tribute to those who lost their lives in war.
- 4 4
Trevi Fountain
Next, arrive at the stunning Trevi Fountain, one of the most famous fountains in the world. Designed by Nicola Salvi in the 18th century, this Baroque masterpiece depicts the god Oceanus riding a chariot pulled by seahorses. Tradition holds that tossing a coin into the fountain ensures your return to Rome, making it a must-do experience. Enjoy the lively atmosphere and take in the intricate details of this magnificent landmark.
- 5 5
Column of Marcus Aurelius
Continue your journey to the Column of Marcus Aurelius, a towering monument that stands in Piazza Colonna. Built in the 2nd century AD, this column was erected to celebrate the military victories of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The detailed spiral reliefs depict scenes from his campaigns, showcasing the power and dominance of the Roman Empire.
- 6 6
Pantheon
A short walk leads you to the Pantheon, one of the best-preserved monuments of Ancient Rome. Originally built as a temple to all gods, this architectural marvel features a massive dome with a central oculus that allows natural light to illuminate its grand interior. The Pantheon is also the final resting place of famous figures like the artist Raphael and Italian kings. As you step inside, admire its harmonious proportions and the engineering genius that has allowed it to stand for nearly two thousand years.
- 7 7
Piazza Navona
Your next stop is Piazza Navona, one of Rome’s most beautiful squares. Built on the site of an ancient Roman stadium, the square is famous for its three ornate fountains, including Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers, which represents the four great rivers of the world. Surrounded by elegant palaces, charming cafés, and street performers, Piazza Navona captures the vibrant spirit of Rome.
- 8 8
Vatican Museums
Crossing the Tiber River, enter the Vatican City to explore the Vatican Museums, home to an extraordinary collection of art and history. Marvel at the intricate tapestries, grand frescoes, and impressive halls that lead to one of the most celebrated masterpieces in the world.
- 9 9
Sistine Chapel
Inside the Sistine Chapel, admire Michelangelo’s breathtaking frescoes, including the iconic Creation of Adam and The Last Judgment. These masterpieces, painted on the ceiling and altar wall, are considered some of the greatest achievements in art history. As you gaze up at the magnificent details, your guide will explain the stories and techniques behind Michelangelo’s extraordinary work.
