Discover one of the most precious collections of art and beauty
Everyone who visits Rome should ensure that one the places they have on their “to see” list is the Borghese Gallery, one of the most beautiful museums in the world.
Formerly the county residence of the Borghese family, the gallery now houses famous masterpieces by Bernini, Caravaggio, Raphael, Titian and many more.
The Borghese is not as big as the Vatican and restrictions on numbers mean that only 360 people are allowed to enter at 2 hourly intervals. Exit is mandatory at the end of the time slot. Reservations must therefore be made well in advance, especially during the summer months.
I will book the tickets so all you have to do is arrive at the pre-arranged meeting point, either in front of the museum or at your hotel if it is downtown.
In the museum we will see the famous mosaic of the Gladiators, a IV century mosaic showing representations of named gladiators in action. The ceilings of the museum are decorated with colorful frescoes representing episodes from Greek and Roman mythology.
The Borghese Gallery is renowned for its marvellus sculptures by Bernini; Apollo & Daphne, Aeneas, Anchises and Ascanius, the Rape of Proserpina, and David are some of those on display and perhaps some of the greatest marble statues to be seen anywhere in the world.
Also on display is one of the largest collections of paintings by Caravaggio, including St. Jerome and the Young Sick Bacchus.
Following the visit to the gallery there will be time to walk through the wonderful park and gardens with their temples, lakes, statues and rare plants. From the gardens you also have a wonderful vantage point to see the breathtaking city of Rome.
