Explore flavors and tastes of the birthplace of Pesto Sauce
Genoa is inextricably linked to food. You can’t say you have been here without trying the many specialties the city has to offer.
This four hour tour, in company of a local foodie guide, is the best way to see the highlights of the city and delight in the local delicacies.
Meet your guide at the ancient port of the city and start this walking tour that takes you through the Carruggi, the alleys of the largest historical center in Europe! Taste the classic Genoese Focaccia in a historical bakery. Locals eat it at any time of the day and it’s good for breakfast, lunch and even as a snack: the warm, slightly greasy dough will enthrall you, ask for the recipe!
Continue your walking to reach the food market. Along the way stop to take a portion of fried squid and stockfish wrapped in the typical paper cone. Explore the food market that offers exclusively local products. Experience the scent of basil that floods the market, choose the best one and go to the restaurant where a chef will cook it! In the market you will also be able to taste the typical Ligurian cheeses with a glass of wine.
As soon as lunch is over, your walking tour will go ahead with Via Garibaldi, the “New Street”, full of nobles’ palaces called “Rolli”, which are UNESCO Heritage Sites. These wonderful palaces were the flagship of the city during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Here you will taste a coffee, an obligatory stop after lunch for every Italian. Walk ahead to reach the main square of the city, Piazza De Ferrari, and admire the eclectic buildings around you, before coming back to the city center to see the San Lorenzo Cathedral and sample a curious quite unique sweet: candied petals of violets and roses.
You will now be back to the starting point and you can say goodbye to your guide!
