Explore the important religious monuments of Rome
Dive into Rome’s colorful religious history as you explore the city’s important landmarks such as the Pantheon and the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. During this 1,5-hour tour you will see ancient tombs, precious relics and beautiful artworks housed in these magnificent monuments and learn how ancient Roman temples were turned into the earliest Christian churches.
First, you will visit one of the best-preserved monument of the Ancient Rome and an important symbol of the city, the magnificent Pantheon. Originally built as a pagan temple, in 608 AD it became a Christian church. It is particulary famous for the circular dome, which is considered the largest in the world since the ancient times. In the company of a professional art historian you will learn how the Pantheon was dedicated to the worship of every god, and what’s known of the Pantheon’s history. You will see the tombs of the great Renaissance artist Raphael, King Victor Emmanuel II, and Queen Margherita, and hear stories about the Pantheon in ancient life.
After a short walk through the city center you will reach another destination of our tour - Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. This Gothic church was built in 1370 on the site of three pagan temples. The facade was restored several times and acquired its current Baroque style in the 18th century. Inside the church, you will find marble works by Michelangelo and Bernini as well as early Renaissance artworks. You will see a pair of 15th-century frescoes, an altarpiece attributed to Fra Angelico, paintings of Filippino Lippi and an altar that covers the headless body of St. Catherine of Siena. You guide will teach you about the history and theartistic significance of all those masterpieces.
