TESTACCIO MARKET AND PYRAMID STREET FOOD TOUR

3 hours guided gourmet experience in the food heart of Rome including many historic sites

Tour Description

There is so much to see and do in Rome but to today’s authentic Rome there is no place better than Rione Testaccio. Here you can stroll and explore for hours, just enjoying being amongst the locals. In this district of Rome all the people know each other, the business are family-owned and have been handed down through the generations. You will find craft shops, restaurants serving traditional Roman fare and a large open market that is the very heart of this vibrant neighbourhood.

Testaccio is also full of places of artistic and cultural interest. It is here you will find the famous Artist’s Cemetery and the ancient slaughterhouse now turned into the Macro Museum. However, a few steps from Testaccio there is the only surviving Ancient Roman Pyramid, the city gate and remains of the ancient city walls.

Some of the highlights of this tour include:

- exploring the traditional working class neighbourhood Testaccio which is now one of the most “happening” places in Rome;

- tasting some of the very best of Rome’s street food; a trip to the local market to taste some of the regional produce and to experience everyday life in Rome;

- discovering the many cheese and salumi shops and sampling some of the regional delicacies;

- visiting the hill built by the ancient Romans which is layered with shards of amphorae;

- strolling around the old slaughterhouse which have been transformed into an amazing art installation complex;

- sampling some of the best pastries in Italy;

- visiting an historic inn to taste some of their delicious pasta and meeting with the chef to learn something of his traditional recipes and visiting the Artist’s Cemetery that Shelley famously declared would make you fall in love with death.
